Jennifer Leuer

Jennifer Leuer is Vice President of Strategy Management for Experian’s Consumer Direct Division, based in Irvine, California. She has worked with Experian since 2003 when the organisation she was working for was acquired by Experian.

”I never thought I’d be working in strategy management as I started my career as a journalist after graduating from California State University, Fullerton with a BA in communications.

Lucky for me, Experian is the kind of company that is willing to take risks on the basis of people’s potential. It offers opportunities to smart and creative employees by moving them to new roles that will stretch and challenge them. Even though I didn’t always have all the skills or experience that may have been required ‘on paper’ for a particular role, they have always believed in my potential.

When the organisation I was working for was acquired by Experian, I had to consider whether I wanted to stay and build a career with Experian. Initially I was worried I would miss the excitement of being part of small ‘dot.com’ but the opportunity to work with such a large global player was in the end too big an opportunity to be missed.

Since then I have not looked back. I have taken on a number of different roles, many of them lateral moves into different functions to develop my exposure to many different parts of the business. I have also been able to complete an MBA at University of California, Irvine and have participated in the Experian Leadership Development Programme.

Ultimately, I would like to work toward running a business unit. My next big challenge is to get experience working on a global project. This is a key part of my development plan and something I will definitely do in the short to medium term.

On top of all this, I also find time to enjoy my young sons. I’m certainly one busy woman, but the rewards both personally and professionally are more than worth it!”

Richard Greenfield

Richard is a Client Team Manager with responsibility for a large team in Experian’s Information Systems (Delivery and Development) division, based in Nottingham, the HQ of Experian UK & Ireland. He joined Experian in 1998 as a Business Analyst.

"Over the past 10 years my career has really evolved and it’s hard to pin down each role I have fulfilled as they have each had a tendency to get bigger by the day! Especially as I have always been keen to volunteer for the ‘difficult’ projects or roles - but then that’s key to how opportunities have opened up for me within Experian.

I currently manage a large team who provide systems support for some of Experian’s most strategically important clients. Experian’s aim is to be world class at partnering with its clients and I see my role and the role of my team as playing a really important part in achieving this.

I have worked on some very challenging projects and sometimes the workload really peaks, especially if the client is global so you have to work with different time zones to liaise with key stakeholders – whether that is at 2am or 11pm UK time!

Right now I am involved in a significant programme of operational change that is happening within my division. This has opened up new doors for me, one of which is the fact that going forward two thirds of my team will be based out of India, so that means a whole new dynamic, not to mention regular plane journeys!

Ultimately I firmly believe that you get out of Experian what you put in. Be prepared to work hard, and constantly push to be involved in the difficult projects or the ones where new markets or technologies are being explored. That way your development is continuous and you get exposure to some really exciting work. My philosophy is ‘never say never’ and so far that has served me well within Experian!’’

Fiona Walsh

Fiona is a Global Account Manager working on major corporate accounts within our growing Italian business. She joined Experian in 1999 and moved to Italy with the company in 2006. She currently lives and works in Rome.

"I joined Experian after spending time working in the banking sector after graduating in1995 from Queens University, Belfast. I knew from early on in my career that I wanted to live and work abroad and working with Experian has afforded me that opportunity. I worked hard to progress my career within the Automotive division of Experian UK, which I joined initially as a Senior Account Manager. My career took off rapidly within this division, but I always kept my eye out for opportunities to work internationally.

My aim originally was to work with the Experian business in America. However, I was lucky enough to be involved in some work that introduced me to the Experian market in Italy and I became more and more involved in this business - so much so that I was eventually offered the opportunity to work in Rome full time! Initially this was on the basis of a three-month secondment, which then got extended to nine months and which has just turned into a permanent role, so I’m delighted!

Moving to a new country is initially quite daunting, but in the event I was surprised by how quickly I got to grips with things. Luckily Experian arranged for me to have Italian lessons and also gave me help with practical things like arranging Italian residency. However it’s pretty much down to you to make a go of things and make the effort to fit into a new culture and appreciate different ways of working – something I often learnt the hard way!

People underestimate what it takes to work internationally. It’s hard work and opportunities are not just presented to you on a plate by Experian. You have to go after them like I did.

Moving to Italy with Experian was a great move for me as it means I am working on major corporate accounts with some of Experian’s key global business clients in a really dynamic and growing market. I’m on a massively steep learning curve and loving every minute of it!"
